z/OS – Monitoring the z/OS System

This course introduces z/OS commands that can be used to display the status and attributes of various z/OS tasks and devices. An overview of system monitoring tools and facilities such as RMF, z/OSMF, traces and EREPS are also provided as well as a description on how SMF data is created and controlled. This course also discusses the need for message suppression and describes how this is achieved.


Computer operators and technical support personnel requiring knowledge about the monitoring of the z/OS system.


Successful completion of Interskill’s z/OS – Concepts and Components course and knowledge of operational concepts.


After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  • Enter system commands at operator consoles
  • Monitor the activity of jobs, tasks, and TSO users
  • Display the status of I/O devices
  • Monitor the system’s use of resources
