IBM Mainframe Communications

This course offers an introduction to computer networks, how they work, and issues faced when network communication occurs.

This course introduces you to core concepts around mainframe networks and communication. Initially the course introduces the different OSI model layers and how they are applied in a mainframe network environment as well as the protocols and technologies used in mainframe network communication. The course introduces SNA and TCP/IP protocols and how they are used in z/OS today. Further to this, the course introduces VTAM and how it works in z/OS as well as discussing how TCP/IP and its features are used in modern mainframe network environments.

This course covers aspects around using VTAM commands to monitor and control various VTAM resources. Initially introducing VTAM display commands to check network status, and to diagnose and solve network issues, and later introducing how to use action commands to control the VTAM network and resolve problems.

This course covers TCP/IP's diverse features and functions. It also provides details on initiating and terminating TCP/IP, along with an introduction to a range of commands for monitoring and managing both TCP/IP client and server applications.

A number of simulations are provided that the student can use to assess their skills and knowledge in relation to the entering of commands, and interpretation of output produced, when monitoring and managing VTAM.

This assessment measures your general knowledge of basic networking concepts, System Network Architecture (SNA), as well as Virtual Telecommunications Access Method (VTAM) concepts and TCP/IP features and protocols. It also tests skills associated with entering appropriate VTAM commands, TCP/IP commands and the interpretation of command displays and VTAM system messages.
